In his Time

The land had been part of his inheritance. He was about 22 when he started building the house. At 25 he had married Maria in this same garden. The newspapers had called their wedding the society event of the year. After all he was in the Forbes list of billionaires and she was on the cover of every magazine.

None of it felt like too much of an achievement.

The 9 year old boy jumped off the branch he’d been sitting on and dusted his hands. His only achievement had been in finding a way to be constantly reborn here.

  1. You got me. I thought it was going to be a spiritual rebirth, not an actual rebirth. Despite it being an “achievement”, I wonder whether he’ll find it to be a positive or not.

  2. That was unexpected! Nicely done.

  3. I wonder if I would want to find such a tree. Nicely done.

  4. The tree where boy is reborn; what an original idea!
    cheers, Lorelei

  5. Interesting that you’ve chosen the ninth year of a boy’s life for rebirth–arbitrary choice or is there a specific reason?

  6. I like this character, a very imaginative and intelligent boy. I wonder how his dreams will change as he grows older and his view of world continues to change. Lovely story!

  7. Wow, I didn’t expect that! Such an unusual and surprising ending – good stuff!
Thanks for your comment on ours.

  8. I wonder how he did it. nicely done, it makes me curious to read more.
I wonder what the cost was… perhaps something/someone he loved?

  9. Mmm I really like his adult sensibility in saying that none of it felt like too much of an achievement contrasting with his 9 year old self in the next line.

  10. Hmmm…wonder what his young wife thinks about her grown husband constantly rebirthing himself at the age of nine. Strange albeit interesting take on the prompt.

  11. Oh, forgot. .I’m #30 on the list.

  12. Hmm, sort of a fountain of youth story. Very interesting. I wonder if he retains the knowledge he had as an adult?
